Topic: Limited maintenance support for several radio stations from the USA.

Quote:
1. A great thanks to Penbex amd Nobi for creating this site and their hard work in maintaining this server. We are all enjoying our radios "new life"
and saving money in doing so.

2. As noted in several posts on this site, radios using the Reciva database (Such as models from Grace Digital, Sangean, CC Crane, Ocean Digital) are scheduled to totally stop working by January 31, 2021. Replacing these radios is costly; I am wondering if it's possible in the future to look into replacing the Reciva server on the radios to the Listenlive
database to give these radios a new life and adding radio databases from IHeart which uses a Shoutcast and AAC stream(these radios have this database of stations but they too could go off on January 31st according to a representative at Grace Digital of California).

3. When I try to donate to Listenlive the page only has currency in Euros. Is there a page for those of us who use US Dollars?

1. You are welcome.
2. Yes, I am looking into it.
3. Fixed on the donate page.

Hello:

I am here in the US and if anyone needs to know if a stream for a US radio station works maybe a new topic could be started on this forum called Check this stream.  IF a US radio station is listed I or others from the US could see if we could tune in the station to verify it works by responding to the message. Stations having an mp3 stream are the easiest to update, and many updated streams can be found by decoding page source codes from sites like Online Radio Box. Stations using Radio.com and IHeart are numerous in the US, and they have other streams that can or cannot be played on most radios. It seems that from my location in New England we get nearly all the US stations, and many in other parts of North America. I've also found many in Australia are also audible.  Stations in Europe. Asia, and Africa can be heard, but some cannot.

And a few other notes too:

Thank you for explaining, Nobi. I understand, that you want to verify, that new/changed station records in the LL-Database are useable for persons living in the U.S.. Don't know an easy way how to do that from here either. Probably it is possible, but by far more complicated than simply letting test a person in the USA.

There are a few updated radio records (currently six) on our database now, which I am not able to verify on my radio due to the regional restrictions.
The records affected contain the words regional limitations in brackets in the description field.

Best wishes for 2021 to everyone!

There are Radio (and TV) stations that use a geographical block.
This means that the station checks the requesters origin IP address and prevents a stream from playing if the IP address is not from one of the allowed regions.

There is no problem with adding streams to the database that are only accessible from within some regions.
Best thing is probably to mark such a stream with a short note in the description, like ("Only streams within xxx" or "Geographically blocked").

Most of the Radio devices have been abandoned long ago by the manufacturer, they are kept working because of the server and the GREAT! work that moderators and users are doing by maintaining station settings.
It is already nearly impossible to test each and every station and when a stream fails, also to test if that stream now is geographically blocked using VPN or proxy solutions or really gone.
Note that some streams play a message that the stream will not work due to the geographical block, others display a message only on their website and some remain silent outside the correct region..
This means that it can happen that a station no longer works and that someone with the skills to find streams is not able to test if it is working or not.
Obviously the only solution is to do this together meaning that users need to report back fi and when something does not work and when it works again.

Regarding VPN/Proxy/Tor solutions, not every VPN (etc.) is fast enough to stream properly.
Also, most devices do not have a native option to use a VPN (etc.).
However, there are routers that contain VPN solutions, some more expensive than others but a good solution if someone wants to get access to geograpically blocked streams on an old device.
Like for example one fo these (there are others as well):
Asus RT-AC88U, Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300, Linksys WRT3200ACM, TP-Link Archer C2300, Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000, Synology RT1900AC, Synology RT2600AC, OpenWRT

Peter,
sorry - I did not take your request (no idea why): there is no function for direct contact with forum participants.

I'll try to explain my problem:

There are these station records on the radio database, which immediately no longer work due to technical changes by the provider/broadcaster.
A correction is then required.
Or I get new stations via 'Add Station' or directly by request for a specific one here in the forum.

If that described above applies to a US station with these REGIONAL RESTRICTIONS, I can probably visit the station on the web with VPN redirection in FireFox or with Tor Browser.
I can then usually find the required stream URL data (the link that makes the music).
But when I bring the stream I found to our LL database, I have to be sure that at least the American with his LL-operated device is able to hear the station without errors.

I have no idea how to connect my radio device to the USA network for the check.
I'm afraid that only someone from the affected region can help me.

Peter,

Reading Post #1 again, I wonder, if you can't simply access this site by using just any VPN Proxy Unblocker Extension in your Firefox-Browser.
Tried it for example with "Hola Free VPN Proxy Unblocker" and configured Hola to pretend i am in USA. Now I can access wdel.com without problems...

In your firefox go to the "Burger Menue" (three horizontal lines), Extensions (or "add-ons"), search for "proxy unblocker", make a choice, click "Add to Firefox".
Back on your "about:addons" page in firefox, set the switch next to the extension to "on". You will see a new Icon in the status bar on the right top. Klick it, and select the region you want to pretend to be, or directly the site you want to unlock.

Hi Peter,
if you can help to solve my problem, I will be happy.

Of the US radio stations (reported as defective on LL or newly submitted by the user) there are currently eight entries that are waiting for repair / approval.
And I'm not able to act on it from Germany because of the geographic restrictions.
The aim here is to find a valid stream URL from such a station. Information on speed and protocol are to be noted.
This stream URL must then be checked for functionality on a device with LL firmware.
If this works (date at "stream check manually"), I can make such a station record available on our LL database.
If you can help, please do!

Here examples (repair) from the queue:

Name:             77 WABC TalkRadio
Home page:    https://wabcradio.com/
Stream URL:  http://live.wostreaming.net/direct/redapple-wabcamaac-imc1
                        MPEG, AAC, 128 kb/s

or

Name:             WLYF 101.5 Lite FM
Hpome page:  http://www.wlyf.com/
Stream URL:  http://wmc1.den.liquidcompass.net/WLYFFM
                        MPEG, 128 kb/s

I understand that this may be a problem with copyrights on material broadcasted by stations with contemporary content.
But what about radiostations that broadcast classical music? One of my favourites is "Minnesota Public Radio", which can be received without problems using any device on the address
But I can't get it on my Worldstation device now. Can't even get a list of stations for Minnesota, only get "Service not available".
Or do I have to update my settings to use your new Stations-Server? Where to set the IP? Is it one of the two DNS-Server settings? Currently those are on 217.000.043.177 and 062.048.120.202

Hi Peter,
"classical MPR" is available on LL database as well, and this one does not work any more.
I think there is an internal re-routing to the secure protocol (hhtpS) at the provider, even for an stream URL call using "normal" HTTP.
Most of the older receiver devices are not able to run HTTP-Secure.

The main part of my message above is:
There are radio records currently listed in the LL approval list, which are marked by me with "isn't available in the EU".
I am not able to handle those records due to the geographical restrictions mentioned in this thread.
An administrator in the USA has to work on it. I can not help. Sorry!

Nobi

Hello:

Radio broadcasting in the US has undergone many changes in the past few years. Changes in ownership, call letters, frequencies, shutdowns of radio stations and internet streams, changes in internet URL streams, and regional restrictions on internet radio streams by US radio companies have diminished the number of radio stations available to listeners. Some examples are like the situation with WDEL which limits broadcasts to the US only (which many stations unfortunately do now, and some even prevent listening outside of the originating state, and I think it's for music licensing purposes). And others have changed their mp3 streams (like hundreds of iHeart radio stations did this summer) to make it difficult to work on our radios, even though in many locations they are the most listened to stations in their areas. Stations owned by Entercom (which bought CBS Radio a few years ago) are not available outside the US. And college stations that are supported by the public funds (without commercial ads) can cease to exist or cut back at any time (and these stations, although they have some interesting cultural programming, have much lower audience numbers than commercial stations with news, talk, and music programming).

I own two Vistaquest VQ-ITR 100 radios and am very interested in having as many stations as possible to work with new stream links, and to this extent I can update the US database doing research my in spare time to help others enjoy more radio stations.

One added note: Regional restrictions on listening to stations outside of the country also exists for US listeners too; some stations from Europe cannot be heard in the US; and quite a few YouTube Videos of TV shows from the UK and Australia cannot be seen or heard in the US.

Best wishes to everyone for a better 2021.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

There are LL records of US radio stations to be corrected or updated.
I am not able to handle this due to geographical restrictions by some of these.

My access to such stations results in messages like:

This site isn't currently available in the EU
